Boating on the Hudson editor
By Ralph J Ferrusi
Thursday morning, October 14, 1943 383 8th Air Force heavy bombers—B-17’s and B-24’s—lifted off from nineteen bases in southeastern England: destination, the ball-bearing factories in Schweinfurt, in central Germany. Sixteen 305th Bomb Group, 364th Bomb Squadron B-17’s lift off the runway in Chelveston, England.
My wife Kathy’s uncle, Staff Sergeant Russell Joseph Kiggins was a tail gunner on one of the B-17’s. Schweinfurt was his sixth mission.
Schweinfurt was very heavily defended. 60 B-17’s—600 men—failed to return to England. The mission became known as Black Thursday. Thirteen of the 364th’s B-17’s never even reached Schweinfurt, lost to machine guns, cannons, and rockets fired by swarms of single- and twin-engined German fighters.
Secret Savings On Your Insurance
Hi Readers! Boats are coming out of the water for the season and with the extra time you may have, now is a good opportunity for you to review your insurance policies for coverage and cost. I have often stated in the past that coverage should be you number one consideration in the purchase of any insurance, but with so much competition, cost should be a concern as well

To Whom It May Concern:
The Hudson River Boat and Yacht Club Association (HRBYCA), representing thirty one (31) boat clubs and three thousand (3000) individual members on the Hudson River, is strongly opposed to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) proposal to put barge anchorage sites along the Hudson River. We request that the Coast Guard hold public hearings so that all factors are considered before any commitment is made regarding such anchorage sites. We also request that a complete environmental review be conducted to explore any potential negative impact on the ecosystem and native wildlife.
The Viking was built at Christen Christensen’s Framnes Shipyard in Sandefjord, Norway in 1892-93. It was copied after the ancient Viking ship Gokstad. Excavated in 1880, the Gokstad had been called the most beautiful ship ever built.
This morning was beautiful. A bit of smoke on the water as mist rose through a great September sunrise. The air a bit cooler and drier than it has been.
Really, though, the weather has been great and it was nearly perfect for the Roundup - which was pretty darned good!
This trip, taking a historic copy of a large Viking ship across the North Atlantic from Norway to Labrador,Canada and then to the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes, was truly epic in every sense of the word! The many videos on Youtube provides the viewer with a real sense of what it was like for the original Vikings to have made this trip a thousand years ago. “Oh, you did not know that Vikings explored much of the Northern part of our continent long before anyone else”? Well they did, and there is plenty of proof given to us by archeologists that this is so. Actually on this trip some of the archeological findings were featured in support of the ships trip.
Letter to the US Coast Guard
Dear Mr. Lapiejko:
We are writing to express our concerns with the proposed rule which would establish ten new anchorage grounds along the Hudson River between Yonkers, NY and Kingston, NY. Chelsea Yacht Club’s Interest in the Proposed Rule Chelsea Yacht Club is located on the east bank of the Hudson River approximately two miles north of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. Our facilities include a mooring field, boat ramp and launching pit. A Submerged Land License from New York State authorizes up to 140 moorings in our mooring area. Members’ boats range in size up to 36 feet overall length.
Question: Hi Alex, I have a 2002 Yamaha 115hp 4-stroke outboard boat engine. Just when I need the engine the most, as I was approaching a dock or slip the engine stalls. It makes my hair stand on end! I have tried everything, new plugs, and fuel filter. Have run most of old gas out of the tank. I even tried sea-foam and stable 360. Some people said I needed new fuel injectors, however engine runs just fine at greater speeds. So it cannot be the injectors. Please Help!
Alex: Without actually testing this engine my guess is that it is out of time. It needs to be hooked up to Yamahas YDS scan tool in order to see if the throttle-positioning sensor was working correctly?... READ FULL ARTICLE
Croton Yacht Club’s “River Day”
The sheer joy of Luella Walsh, age 5, catching her first catfish, and the joy that Tony DiModugno shows in helping her, (he gently held the rod while Luella reeled it in), proves out the saying, “give a child a fishing rod, and they will fish forever!” Commodore Dennis Kooney of the Croton Yacht Club and his crew of volunteer yacht club members have built a wonderful concept into a reality that every yacht club should establish at least once a year on the Hudson River.
