while in high school!
Unfortunately in 2001 the recession hit and the marina closed. we called all over but were un-
able to find any other places to rent a boat. Therefore, this time honored tradition of nearly 30
years was brought to an abrupt end.
Sure over the years we tried crabbing in New Jersey. it was never the same. the crabs small
and dirty. The reports from the marinas that rented boats always exaggerated. We had all but
given up on crabbing until I happened to catch that random episode.
I recorded the show and played it for my uncle and his son. Wow! The crabs in that episode
looked big and blue, like the NewYork crabs of decades ago. My cousin recently moved to
Carmel, NewYork and thought we might give it a try crabbing with traps like we saw you
yourself do so successfully.
As such, we plan to make the 2-hour trip ourselves to meet him there this week. According to
the episode, you took Tony crabbing in the town of Verplanck NY, near the Indian Point reser-
vation. This morning while looking on Google maps it appeared to me that it was not possi-
ble that this was the actual location we saw you actually pulling crabs from the water or boil-
ing them on the beach. Indian Point as well as another factory appears to be directly north in
all of the video. Is this Peekskill NY or Annville preserve park?
If you would kindly tell us the location to drive to so that we can crab where you guys were
crabbing that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you again for bringing back some great memories along with establishing for us, we
hope, a new time honored tradition.
Sincerely,
Christian Morelli
(The Group actually did visit the area in late September; unfortunately they arrived at dead
low tide, the worst possible time to go crabbing in our area. Christian, his father and friends
stuck it out and were very successful once the tide came in)…
Hi john.
Just taking the time to thank you for your help in getting my family crabbing again in New
York. We actually had better luck at the end of the day, when the tide was right as you pre-
dicted. We ended with 14 crabs, 7 in the last 40 mins alone as we tried both piers you recom-
mended. We ended up with fourteen huge tasty blue claws just the like the old days!
I think that an overnight trip is probably best, so the locals probably have the best of it! Still,
we would like to try our hand one more time before November. Plan on crabbing again soon.
Thank again!
-Christian
