Hudson River Boating
and Seamanship Course
The historic Hudson River has long been the principal venue for commercial as well as recreational
boating in our region. The recent resurgence of interest in the river for recreation and tourism has
heightened the need for boaters to be more skilled and safe than ever before. That is why boaters of all
experience levels wishing to refresh and update their knowledge and seamanship skills will find this
course essential. Emphasis is given to the unique skills needed to safely boat on the Hudson River.
Topics include: basic navigation and navigational aids, inland rules and waterways, tides and cur-
rents, weather, docking and anchoring,VHF Radio, Marlinspike Seamanship, and emergency afloat. The
principles of sail and the NYS Canal System will also be discussed. This course also provides continuing
education for those who have taken the Boating Safety Course.
Instructor: Captain Stanley A.Wilcox has over thirty years experience with both power and sail ves-
sels. He holds a U.S. Coast Guard Masters License and serves as Senior Captain aboard the Spirit of
Hudson. CaptainWilcox is a member of the American Professional Captains Association and author of
the book, The Hudson from Troy to the Battery.
