boater with a beautiful 42 Chris
that his family has grown up on
and cruised Long Island Sound,
he still enjoys coming down in
the evening for glass of wine, or
his favorite ice cream sandwich.
Dean has a unique Ocean 48 that
he has redone, re-engineered,
re-configured everything but the
hull, I once described it as the 8th
Ocean in an article we did on the
boat. Eddie S just traded up to a
sportfishing Chris with big diesels
to get out for some canyon fish-
ing. His 4 and 8 year old daugh-
ters love spending time on the
new boat with dad, but his 6 year
old son is eager to take a sander
to the bright work. A few weeks
back he had a pin hole leak in an
exhaust pipe and we had so many
guys on the boat with tools and
remedies to get the thing off, we
probably came close to sinking it.
Vince, architect of this years
pig roast, destined to become an
annual event, always shows up
with great toys and never makes
a big deal of it, just living his
dream. We have Boston Whaler
lover and expert Barry, if there’s
anything you want to know about
whalers, or restoring them, he’s
the guy. Al is our “Head Fisher-
man in Charge”, when he’s not
fishing he’s busy as a Director
of the Hudson River Fisherman’s
Association organizing a fishing
contest or a charity event. Our
resident expert on all sorts of ex-
otic woods and local politics, Lou,
who’s had a boat here for years
and we all tease him about maybe
getting it in the water someday.
Bob gives the CG Auxiliary boat-
ing and safety classes for NJ State
licensing that many of our boating
families have taken together.
I know I’m not getting to
everybody, or saying much about
anybody, that would be a book,
but I hope you get the picture.
We have a great group of people
at a small public marina and that
makes the Edgewater Municipal
Marina a very special experience.
Boaters carrying on the traditions
of seamanship and seawomanship
Gren Richmond Edgewater style,
and yes we have boats that regu-
larly leave the docks with women
at the helm. We have boaters from
4 to 84, from all the trades, pro-
fessions, jobs and businesses, with
boats from 15 to 50 feet, from
$1000 to a $1,000,000 dollars
boating and working together with
little more than a three foot walk
way between them. The parking
lot has new Porsches next to rusty
pick-up trucks whose owners are
multi ethnic, multi-generational
and span the entire income spec-
trum. A place that’s friendly and
open, but secure, because owners
don’t just walk by a loose line or
a problem on a neighbors boat.
We’re there in sun and storm and
together for many of the holidays,
sharing the ebb and flow of the
seasons, the river, and marina life.
Every year about this time there is
a certain sadness that comes over
us as the days get shorter and we
talk of winterizing, shrink wrap-
ping and all that goes with winter
lay-up, but on the other hand, it’s
time to plan our annual holiday
dinner. I hope you have similar
stories, characters and good times
at your marina and are planing
holiday get togethers with your
summer boating friends. Have a
happy, healthy and safe holiday
season and hope to see you on
the river in the spring.
Lovely “Jersey Girls” with their own boat
